I changed the tire to the recommended larger size. There is plenty of clearance. I've only ridden solo so I have not dealt with the potenial problem of the extra weight and clearance. Only concern was to change regular screws to flat head screws and increase the size of the bracket whole to allow screw to fit in a flusher manner.
